The Bolognese was developed in Bologna, Italy as early as the eleventh or twelfth century. These lovely white fluffy dogs have endured a long history. For centuries the Bolognese were the coveted companions of the European Nobles. They are depicted in Renaissance art and in writings; even mentioned by Aristotle.
Their bright, joyful temperaments made them a favorite of the Royal household. As the popularity and power of the aristocracy began to diminish, this breed began to wane. It was saved from near extinction by a small group of enthusiasts. In Italy, France, and Holland, breeders have been working hard to restore the breed during the last couple of decades. The Bolognese is a breed belonging to the Bichons, a family of small companion breeds originating from the Mediterranean. Along with the Bolognese, the Maltese, Havanese, Bichon frise, Coton de Tulear and Lowchen all belong to this family. The Bolognese have hair not fur thus making them desirable to families with allergies to dog dander. They typically stand 8 to 10inches at the shoulder and weight about 5 to 12 pounds. Their hair is an all white color at times with bits of champagne color. Overall they are a white haired dogs.
