Although Pomeranians were first introduced to English nobility by Queen Charlotte, it was

her granddaughter Queen Victoria--who, some hundred years later, had the biggest impact

on promoting the breed and encouraging its popularity.  While touring the Mediterranean in

1888, Queen Victoria found in Florence, Italy, a mid-size Pomeranian, weighing approximately

12 pounds, and brought him home.  The 12 pounders that the Queen favored over the earlier

20 to 30 pound specimens of Charlotte's era soon gave way to a more fashionable, smaller

still (under eight-pound) dog and the Toy Pomeranian was born in England.

The evolution of the Pomeranian breed in America closely paralleled that of the mother

country, Great Britain.  Many early American dogs were imported from England and initially

were of the larger white variety.  Initially in dogs shows there were two classes of Poms--

under eight pounds and over eight pounds.  Today the AKC classifies the Pomeranian as a

Toy Breed with a weight standard from 3 to 7 pounds. Colors are another evolution in the

Pomeranian.  The original color was white.   Black was later introduced along with the

diluted colors of brown, blue.  Subsequently , the reds and oranges came in favor.  Although

almost all colors were acceptable in dogs shows, step had been taken to favor solid colors

and the standards reflected that stance.  Now the AKC standard states that "acceptable

colors to be judged on a equal basis; any solid color, any solid color with lighter or darker

shadings of the same color, any solid color with sable or black shadings, parti-color, sable

and black & tan...."
